Get Warmed Up This Winter

Get warmed up this Winter

As a kid growing up in Oregon, few things brought such unexpected glee—such pure joy and happiness—as two simple words: SNOW DAY!!! Not only did this announcement signal a justifiable get out of jail free card from school, it also meant a day of outdoor adventure interspersed with delicious snacks to warm the heart and fuel the fun.

As an adult living in New York City, I have to say, I still get pretty darn excited at the sight of snow. Under a thick blanket of white, the city never looks more romantic and magical. As lovely as it is to take it all in from my cozy windowsill, the real fun (the stuff of memories) is getting out to  enjoy it up close and personal. Best of all, winter workouts hardly feel like work when you’re having such a good time in the process. Here are just a few of my favorite wintertime activities, sure to get the blood pumping and bring out the kid in us all.

WINTER SPORTS HAVE THE BEST ACCESSORIES: As anyone who knows me will attest, I love accessories. Get into the spirit and dress for the occasion with waterproof Gore-Tex™, anti-fog goggles, and light-as-a-feather ergonomic snowshoes. Whether it’s downhill or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or sledding, great gear adds just the right pop of color and coolness factor to whatever winter sport suits your fancy.

FREE AND EASY: Taking in some fresh air and getting the imagination running is easy when the landscape is so beautiful and evocative. Somehow, a cover of snow can make a simple walk in the park feel more like a hike through Narnia or a scene from Doctor Zhivago. Before it all melts, get out there and make a snowman or create a snow angel! And never underestimate the cardiovascular and physiological benefits of a good ol’ fashioned snowball fight between friends.

ZEN AND THE ART OF SHOVELING: Maybe it’s the satisfaction of seeing a clear and distinct path of accomplishment, but I’ve always enjoyed shoveling snow. Not only is the effort practical, but it’s also a great full body workout! Start with a good snow shovel and remember to bend your knees. And while you’re at it, be a good neighbor and offer to shovel for those who might find it difficult to shovel for themselves.

A WARM TUMMY IS A HAPPY TUMMY: After you’ve burned off some serious calories and worked up a healthy appetite, defrost with a bowl of Salsa Mac with Colby Jack, a spicy twist on a wholesome, traditional favorite. Or for a crowd, break out the fondue pot for a little retro fun! I like to make mine with a blend of Emmenthaler and Gruyère cheeses, accompanied by blanched broccoli florets and baby carrots, wedges of boiled new potatoes, and cubes of rustic country bread. For dessert, serve up bowls of Mexican hot chocolate made like the regular kind but with a combination of fresh and evaporated milk and a touch of cinnamon and ancho chili. And for the traditionalist, nothing beats a gooey, fresh from the oven chocolate chip cookie with a tall glass of skim milk. Now that’s what I call a perfect snow day.
