A New Year. A Fresh Start.
And Resolutions To Live By.
Call me optimistic but I always think my best year is yet to come. Each January, I am ever hopeful that this is it! This will be my year! In 2008, I will live smarter, healthier, happier, and become more the person I want to be. As Oprah would say, this is the year to "live your best life."
Easier said than done. I know.
Last year, I resolved to only make a single resolution and that was to "Be More Moisturized." I don't think any explanation is necessary. I'm happy to report that I've had great success in sticking to my goal. So for 2008, I've decided to up the ante to commit myself to five New Year’s resolutions in hopes of inspiring you to do the same.
#1. GET MORE ENERGY.
Living and working in New York City can be exhausting! It seems almost counter intuitive, but in order to get more energy, I need to expend more energy. And in order to maintain a slim physique, I need to choose my foods wisely. This means making time for regular exercise and eating a nutritious breakfast. For me, that means long, brisk walks several times a week and a delicious high-energy smoothie which doesn't require chewing or using utensils (two things I'm not so good at first thing in the morning).
#2. GET COOKING.
People think that because I went to culinary school, I must cook all the time. Truth be told, I like to eat out and order in as much as the next person. However, nobody can underestimate the value of a home cooked meal—for the mind, body, spirit, and even the bank account! Cooking need not be a big production. A few easy tips can have dinner on the table in no time at all. Peace of mind for me is having a well-stocked pantry and knowing that there are endless variations to be made on simple but satisfying dishes.
#3. GET IN MORE FRIEND TIME.
Studies have long shown the benefits of strong interpersonal relationships in helping us to live longer and more fulfilled lives. I'm all for that and yet I still get so wrapped up in my work and whatnot that I hardly allow myself any time for friends. That is why, this year, I resolve to have my friends over more often. Instead of a noisy restaurant, I pledge to entertain more often in my home. Whether it be for cocktails or dinner (see #2), my goal is more quality time with those that mean the most to me.
#4. GET SMART.
On a regular basis, I like to take on a little project to further my culinary skills and knowledge. Earlier this year, I took a wine pairing class at The French Culinary Institute, which proved to be a real eye and palette opener. This year, I'd like to take on wine's pairing partner—cheese! This year, I pledge to introduce more fine cheeses into my life. With so many wonderful artisan producers out there, I doubt I'll have any problems discovering new favorites.
#5. GET RELAXED.
I'm a little stress ball. (So I've been told). I have to remind myself throughout the day to stop clenching my jaw and to relax my shoulders. This is why I resolve to take more baths in 2008. Specifically, milk and honey baths—the kind Cleopatra made famous. Luxury doesn’t come easier. Add 3 cups of regular or powdered milk to your warm bath water along with 1/2 cup of honey. If you wish, add a few drops of essential oil in your favorite scent for a little aromatherapy. Afterwards, don’t forget to moisturize!
