Keeping Fit, Lean, and Happy During the Holidays

Keeping fit, lean, and happy
during the holidays

With all of the gifts you might receive during the holidays, those extra pounds are one “present” you probably don’t want to receive. Give yourself the gift of a little foresight and planning so you can avoid putting on extra weight during the holidays. Here are just a few ways to help you stay in shape during this holiday season.

“Actively” celebrating the holidays
When away on vacation during the holidays, try to take advantage of local walking tours or hotel fitness room. If you are staying home for the holidays, stay active, too. Use the extra free time you have to start a fitness routine. If you are already an active person, then don’t let your exercise habits go on vacation as well.

If you can't exercise as much during the holidays because you're busy with family obligations, then exercise when you can, since a little is better than none. Or improvise. When you go shopping, start with a brisk walk to all the stores to scope out gift ideas before you begin. You can even suggest a short walk with family or friends, which is another way to fit some exercise in and catch up. Considering the health benefits, sticking to your existing plan will be the best gift you can give to yourself.

Have a heaping helping of healthy habits
For holiday meals, start with low-fat versions of salads and dairy dishes. Then move on to other options such as fish, skinless chicken, grilled meats and whole-grains. And if you decide to indulge in dessert, take a small portion at first and see how you feel. A helpful hint is to decide on a healthy strategy ahead of time, so you’re not tempted by the inevitable, highly caloric treats added to the festivities.

If you, like most, enjoy rich holiday foods, then enjoy them in small portions. During this busy time, there is also a tendency to skip meals or eat erratically. By making a point of eating at regular meal times you’ll be less likely to fall off the healthy path.

Another tip, when attending holiday parties, is to be sure to move away from the hors d’oeuvre table. It’s common to continually reach for another nibble when you’re standing near by chatting. By focusing on the people you're spending time with means you’ll fill up on good times instead.

It’s the holidays so indulge your self …occasionally
These holidays only come once a year, so it’s OK to enjoy some holiday goodies. The key is to remember to control your portions. However you deal with the holidays, make the decision that this is the year that you won’t gain that additional holiday weight. Do your best to stay active and eat healthy while not depriving yourself of all the fun. Like everything else in life, it's all about moderation. Happy Holidays!
